About Kate

After four years of stellar collections, Sydney based fashion designer Kate Hurst has gone from strength to strength, accumulating a dedicated following of young women along the way.
Maintaining the grass-roots foundations that saw her crafting one-off garments at the local markets, Hurst has sent her creations down the catwalk at Australian fashion week, spoken at fashion forums at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum and established a place in some of Japan and America’s most prestigious boutiques.

Classic, quirky and thoroughly feminine, Kate Hurst has defined an inimitable aesthetic, injecting each collection with her distinct personal touch. Perfected silhouettes, eye-catching details and a muse with a story to tell all make for quintessential Kate Hurst.

Four years since the label’s inception, 28-year-old Hurst is still single handedly running her bustling fashion hub. Despite its rapid growth, Hurst remains dedicated to quality and not quantity, taking pride in the fact that each and every garment is Australian made and distributed exclusively.

With each winning collection introducing a new and unique character in the Hurst hall of fame, Kate’s insatiable appetite for pop culture and the arts stems from a Fine Arts background. For fledgling designer Hurst, being mentored in sculpture, painting, film and costume design in the early days of the label solidified the presence of several timeless femme icons in collections to come.

A few years on, Hurst’s clothing is proving to be the label of choice for female actresses, musicians and creative types alike. Suburban Mayhem writer Alice Bell chose to be clad in Kate Hurst for both the AFI Awards and The Cannes Film Festival, and actresses Emma Lung and Emily Barclay are Kate Hurst regulars. The Howling Bells’Juanita Stein and The Duke Spirit’s Leila Moss have also been spotted sporting Kate Hurst, while the designer is regularly namedropped in Australia’s most highly coveted fashion press, the likes of Marie Claire, Vogue, The Sydney Morning Herald and RUSSH.

The Winter 08 collection sees the Kate Hurst girl look to the silhouettes of the 90’s and the cult TV series Twin Peaks. With quality tailoring and fabrication taking the lead, this season’s signature looks are drawn from Hurst’s glory box of cinematic and musical muses, and crafted from an array of fabrics such as pure linen, silk cotton cord, stretched denim, soft cotton knits and leather.

Working amongst a hive of creativity in inner city fashion mecca, Surry Hills, Kate is surrounded by Sydney’s forward thinkers. Through her website and online communities such as myspace, Kate is able to realise her creative vision digitally, and continue to push the label forward to an ever responsive public. For 2008 Kate Hurst has her sights set on the US and European market.
